Home vs Commercial Treadmills
Home use treadmills
Compact, affordable, and ideal for apartments or spare rooms. Many models fold upright for easy storage.
Commercial treadmills
Built for constant use in gyms, studios, and leisure centres. AC motors, heavy-duty frames, and simple maintenance.
Semi-commercial treadmills
Stronger than home models, but more cost-effective than full commercial. Great for shared spaces like PT studios or corporate gyms.
Curved Treadmills
Manual, motor-free design that responds to your stride. Excellent for sprints, HIIT, and technique work.
AC vs DC Motors – What You Need to Know
DC Motors (Direct Current):
- Standard in home treadmills
- Quieter and more compact
- Ideal for walking and jogging
- Require rest periods between heavy use
AC Motors (Alternating Current):
- Standard in commercial treadmills
- Built for continuous, heavy-duty running
- Higher power output, handles heavy loads easily
- Louder but far more durable for gyms/studios
FEI Tip: Choose DC for home, AC for gyms, and semi-commercial options if you need a balance.
Why Buy a Treadmill Instead of Running Outdoors?
- Controlled environment (safe, smooth, weather-proof)
- Consistent pace and incline options
- Easier to track progress with on-screen metrics
- Safer alternative for evening training
Key Checks Before You Buy
- Belt Size: Taller users and faster runners benefit from longer decks
- Motor Rating: Walkers need less, runners need higher power
- Speed & Incline: Check ranges for your training needs
- Comfort & Cushioning: Match the deck feel to your stride
- Noise & Flooring: Use a treadmill mat or gym flooring in apartments to reduce vibration

Treadmill FAQs
What speeds suit walking, jogging and running?
Walking pads are built for steady walking. Home and commercial treadmills cover a wider range of speeds for jogging and running. Choose a unit that comfortably supports your pace and check the product page for specifics.
What motor rating should I look for?
Walkers can use lower ratings. Frequent runners need higher ratings. For constant heavy use, choose an AC motor treadmill.
Are foldable treadmills safe to store upright?
Yes, fold the deck fully, secure the lock, and use the wheels to move. Always keep children and pets away during folding/unfolding.
Walking pad vs standard treadmill — what’s the difference?
Walking pads/under-desk treadmills are compact, tuned for steady walking. Standard treadmills include larger belts, higher speeds, and incline for jogging and running.
Who should consider a curved treadmill?
Perfect for sprinters, interval trainers, and anyone focusing on form. The manual belt responds to your stride. If you prefer fixed programmes or automatic incline, choose a motorised treadmill.
What belt size should I choose?
Taller users and faster runners feel more stable on longer/wider decks. Compact belts are fine for walking and smaller spaces. Always compare product specs.
Will a treadmill be too noisy in an apartment?
Noise depends on speed, flooring, and treadmill type. A treadmill mat helps reduce vibration and protects floors. Place the unit on a firm, level surface for best results.
How do I maintain a treadmill?
Keep the belt centred, wipe down after use, lubricate as per manual, and carry out routine checks. FEI also provides service and support if needed.
Do treadmills support Bluetooth or apps?
Many do, some link to fitness apps or heart rate monitors, others support media. Check the product page for compatibility.
